Patcher alternative?
Hi all,
I'm new, having given up on my copy of EQ back in 2001 due to subscription costs. So, I really don't know what I'm talking about here, but it might be worth discussing, since I noticed how much trouble people (including me are having with patch syncronisation with "EQlive".
Windows Firewalls often wrap apps and ask the user if they want that app to be given net access. So I was thinking... couldn't EQ's patcher be wrapped with something that first checks a site to check if it's safe to patch before allowing the patcher to talk to EQ official patch servers?
Also.. and this might be more difficult or impossible... perhaps a list of acceptable patches could be downloaded, and then the files available could be filtered before being passed to the EQ patcher?

Sony does not keep old patch files up, thy only have the newest, and there the only people able to legaly give them out.

We can't do anything to distribute old patches. If you don't have the files, you don't have the files.
For seeing what works with what, theres my EQVerCheck (which I'm in the process of updating but its hard to get people that know their patch dates to give me what SEQ numbers they have :/ ) that could tell you if your live patch works with a version of EQEMu.

C++ is wonderful.

Thanks for your input guys. My point wasn't really related to distributing old patches... what I'm suggesting is a way to protect people from upgrading beyond the point where EqEmu works. I'll take a look at EqVer though

Nice idea !!
Perhaps a program who start Eqgame.exe (with changed eqhost.txt)
and start everquest.Exe (patcher) only when eqemu is live compatible ?
I don't know how make that , but if all newb coming, have this starting program, we can see less idiot questions ?

Yes but if this program is use for start client,
the program can say "Ohhh ! no your client isn't compatible with eqemu with a big text explain eqemu forum rules" and newb don't say anymore : "i don't know why i have 1017 or have any patch ?". Ahhh be peace

Thats not a bad idea, really
If maybe the EQvercheck could also launch the game, then ppl could simple use it to, check their client and start it...
something like this:
1 download and run EQVerCheck
----> it checks the version
-------->inform user, version and compatibility
----------> make changes to host file (to connect) if server found that it could use
--------------> launch game
might solve the "patchme" problem, the what version, and the how to connect.... for mainly those whom are not running their own servers...or could be a lot of work for nothing....
ofcourse, its 2am and been a long day so i could be just babbling... lol

I'm not sure I see the advantage to that. If you are only playing EQEMu, starting the game with patchme will always be compatible with that version. It only becomes incompatible if you patch. Theres no way for EQVerCheck (the current infrastructure) to see if the live patch will break EQEMu without already downloading it. Just come here and look to the top of the page to know if you can patch. If you forget, well, make a new EQ directory for EQLive.

I know, EQvercheck can't say if you have patch or no, but it know client compatible with current Eqemu, and can say "don't try to connect you don't have client compatible with Eqemu" isn't it ?

If you have EQVerCheck downloaded, why are you patching (that directory)? Either because you want to give up that EQEmu directory, live is now compatible, or that directory wasn't compatible in the first place. If the purpose is to stop someone from accidentally patching, why would they have EQVerCheck downloaded in the first place?
