Default Which Linux System...

HI all. I am going to be setting up my own server and was wondering which version of Linux is most popular for EQEMU. I have never touched the OS but really don't feel like paying an arm and a leg and my soul windows and I was told this might be a more logical option.

Any advice would be awesome! Thanks.

I would suggest Debian.

Nothing against CentOS in general, but it ships with 2+ year old gcc version that does not support C++11. Unless you're comfortable installing an alternate version you would be best picking a distro that includes a newer compiler.

Adding the devtools was rather easy on CentOS. https://github.com/EQEmu/Server/wiki/GCC-below-4.6

Yeah, not hard at all, but an extra step that someone might not be familiar or comfortable with.

Of course, if installing a second version of gcc seems tough then perhaps avoiding Linux altogether would be the best idea.

I find Debian based systems easier to use but thats because I'm used to them - starting from zero it's not really a big deal which one you choose. I use Ubuntu for both client and servers, although I've installed Mint on the client side and it looks promising (Ubuntu derived.)
