Black screen after server select

Hello, I'm currently trying to get back into the EQEmulator after a few years off and am having some trouble connecting past server select.

I'm running on Windows 8.1. I have an unpatched version of everquest Free to play (the one linked in the Wiki) from Steam. I have also tried this with a fully patched version just to test and same issue.

I have tried pointing to both 5999 and 5998 login servers. 5998 wont let me get to server select. I also have tried emulauncher but it says:


Currently im running with the "patchme" short cut and 5999 login server and that is letting me get to server select, but after that, eq goes windowed and all I get is a black screen with a mouse. I have to restart my computer for it to go away (task manager doesn't work, cmd opens behind it and Alt+F4 does nothing)

I have tried screen resolutions matching 4:3 on both desktop and game, and im at a loss for what steps to take now.

please let me know of anything else I can try or if the steam version is even supported at all.

The Steam download isn't supported anymore, they updated it.
