You're right SQL 4.0 is what's recommended, but the problem is, you can't find it anywhere!
So you have to find what's out there, and I went for the latest at the time; MySql 5x. MySql 4.1x is fine ( I have used it too), but MySql 5x handles innoDB tables better (probably does more than that).

The newbee's are going to have to change, like it or not. and sometime soon, they'll be posting they can't find MySql 4.1 either. So, you might as well as get the newest MySql you can find, learn how to use it.
