I found this behaviour as well...seems that the zone actually crashes for me in the background.

Didn't see any useful log info.

This is only day one of me playin' around though...

I'll try the same DB on different boxen to see.

Hmm I'm also having a lot of problems, not sure if it's because of the quad core though, my specs:

Q6600
Geforce 7900gt
2gig

-I can't run in a 1600*1200 res, 1280*1024 is the only one that seems to work
- full screen mode makes everequest crash
- If I turn on the new models I have no moving animations, and it's laggy
- If I turn them off it's like I'm warping, there seems to be no sort of lag on the buttons, but my screen just stutters each second for like a second.

So it's not really playable for me, I've got the newest nvidia drivers, anything else that could solve this?

I used to have a similar problem on my AMD 3800 X2, GF 6800GT video, 4x512MB Ballistix ram, and triple raptor 74GB HDDs until I changed the processor affinity to CPU0 only AND went into the Power Options in control panel and set the "Power Schemes" to "Always On".

Processor Affinity CPU0 is a MUST at least from my studies as EQ seems to only use the primary core without issues/crashes. I have tried using just CPU1 (the second core) and still get crash issues. My guess is it's some kind of problem with the clients programing.

Setting Power Schemes to Always On cleared up my graphics lagging you were getting. While up front you would suspect it's a graphics card problem, it's actually your CPU causing it. By default, multi core CPU's scale down or even turn off un-used cores to help reduce power draws and overheating. The EQ programming seems to be missing a the programming hook to kick the CPU up to it's normal operating speed and thus leaves it at the reduced speed. For most CPUs this is around 800~1200 MHz, which is enough to play eq, but is by no means a smooth experiance you would expect.

I have also noticed on my single-core laptop that setting the Power Scheme is a must or I get similar results as my desktop dual-core.

I hope this helps and if you are still having issues, let me know and I will see if I can get you some more solutions based off of your perticular setup/problems.

Default aww

I'm using an AMD Quad-Core and when I try to set affinity to eqgame.exe it says that I'm denied access. I am the admin account so I am unable to bind EQ to one core... I don't get the ghost issues but I never get to past making a character. Also, it takes me 6-7 clicks to click on anything when making a char. It's quite choppy.

Try the fix I suggested above. See if setting it in compatibility mode for Windows 98 (if you're running XP) or for Windows XP (if you're running Vista) has any affect.

Default It works

Compatibility mode suggested from So_1337 successful so far! I've created a character and logged in with no hindrances. Thanks much, sorry I didn't spot it at first glance-thru.
