I enjoyed the leveling up of materia in FF that was a nice feature.

Think if you could make actual spells level and evolve like materia that would be a really cool custom feature with different spell types evolving in different mannerisms.

If you could evolve in various stages say 3-4 stages or it could even depend on a case by case basis depending on the spell type heals, buffs, damage spells, ect...you might even additionally have spell specific leveling stages as well.

Buff spell example
Stage 1) Reduce the buff's cannot cast this spell on a character this level requirements by X.
Stage 2) Reduce the buff's cast time by X.
Stage 3) Increase the buff's duration by X.

Heal spell example
Stage 1) Reduce mana cost by X.
Stage 2) Reduce cast time by X.
Stage 3) Reduce casting interruption chance by X.

Damage spell example
Stage 1) Reduce casting interruption chance by X.
Stage 2) Reduce by resistance chance by X.
Stage 3) Increase damage by X.

A bit different than what NatedogEZ is talking about, but I believe some of it kind of falls along the same line as well. There are different possibilities in terms of how you go about it. He's utilizing special augs, but AA's, and Tomes, and focus effects among other things could be used as well.

As far as the spell stages examples I think you could create additional spells that you find and or get from via quests as a method of incremental upgrades. I think it would add a nice layer of customization to a server.
