Photoshop is an industry standard. For those concerned about cost, Adobe released a more cost-friendly solution for Photoshop with 
Adobe Creative Cloud ($9/mo). It's not really fair to compare Gimp with Photoshop anyways considering it was never modeled as a photoshop alternative. Honestly, if you feel that you can create better artwork with mspaint, go for it. I'm not creating these tutorials to compare software. I am just trying to share what I know.
