I'm right there with you. The lack of in-game assists, the lack of single-player driven solo progression, the difficulty, the risk of soloing, the risk of diving deep into dungeons, etc all forced players to work together and get to know each other.
It's part of why I make all my custom content brutally hard with big rewards. I love the challenge and I love forcing my players to work together. No game has ever delivered that same feeling that I got from classic EQ.
