I tried to replicate this issue, with source I pulled and compiled Aug 25th. I booted around for awhile, misty, etc. and no problems.
Then I enabled mercs, toured around and still no problems, so I am not sure how random that has been happening for any.
One trivial thing I did notice with mercs, even though I have the upkeep cost disabled, I still get the upkeep message for it.
It doesn't remove plat from inventory but gives the message that it is charging me XX platinum every 3 minutes.
