New Open Source Client...
Hi. I used to stroll through these forums pretty often and help users with their problems. Even worked on the PEQ Quest Team for a while. Tried once to sit down and work on the server code, but that was a bit too over my head.
I've kind of just been coming back periodically since then. =/ Anyway.
My question is this: How viable would it be for a group of people (maybe even just 1 or 2 of us) to develop a client that would work with the already developed server? Everyone is always so worried about catching up to some version of EQ so that people can play and, in my opinion, it's really not fair to keep expecting the DEVs to catch EQ at any point.
That and I played Everquest recently and I REALLY do not like where the game is heading. It would be a crying shame to see this project take on the look and the feel of the game as it is today. =(
I know this is a lot of work that we're talking and I don't take this kind of thing lightly. I recently made a 3D engine with a freeware map format (some program named Delgine. Not too bad of a program or map format once you get used to it) and got stuck on Octrees of all things. =/ Of course, this made collision detection next to impossible and... well, avoiding the mess, let's just say I know what kind of time, effort, blood, sweat, tears, and nightmares go into even just the groundworks of a 3D engine. I also know that Sony's map and model files probably aren't exactly the nice jumble of coordinates that Delgine's files were.
So, once again, the question is: How viable is it? Would we even be able to find people willing to put time into it? Would it make the job of the DEVs easier in the long run? Would developing an open source client to interface with the server be out of the scope or in a completely different direction from this project?
