I pay for hosting online, I was wondering what it takes to setup a server on a remote host

Well it's not too hard once you get used too it... Most of the serious servers in this community have Dedicated hosts.. Stick with it you will figure it out.. Ask a question and you will get an answer ... I suggest you go with a Dedicated Linux Host in the end.. Far more stable.

I have linux hosting, i work through cpanel, i just have no idea what the first step even is.... Once I get the ball rolling I think I can handle it... unfortunately I don't know where the ball is or what it even looks like.

Probably would be better if you can get SSH access. CPanel can make things difficult, especially if you don't have the power to launch applications.

Ok, so I downloaded Putty, got SSH setup, and im in there now.

I had downloaded a precompiled server... im assuming this will only work on windows... is that right? I don't know dick about linux, sorry.

After logging into ssh i fumbled around and made it to the directory its in. /home/build, and typed "World" and it says i"No such file or directory" but im staring at it in cpanel.

Is that because its a windows compiled thing... and if so how do I go about getting it compiled for linux?

um yuk,

This isn't good is it? This mean I don't have permissions to compile or what?

make: execvp: gcc: Permission denied
make: *** [MMFMutex.o] Error 127

follow the linux compile guide in the wiki

btw if you are using cpanel well then the directory is /home/your_username/build not /home/build

=(

GCC is disabled and host doesn't allow the running of applications. Guess if I want to do it, and not on my own machine I'll have to buy better hosting.

Are you talking about web hosting? Those are made for hosting websites, not game servers. You would need dedicated hosting, which is either your own dedicated server, or a virtual server that you get complete control over. Dedicated hosting is normally considerably more costly than web hosting.
