I have downloaded stuff like a lot of people ... if I get taken to court and they make the charges stick ... then that is my fault and I deserve what I get. What pisses me off is people who make the excuse that they download music 'because the music publishing companies charge too much for it'.
That's crap ... if you break the law, don't complain if you get taken to court for it, just like if you steal from a store ... just because the product is digital and easily copied, doesn't make it right. If you don't like the price they want to charge, then don't buy, or 'steal' it. Or if you do steal it, don't complain when you are prosecuted for breaking the law.
Just my 2 pence, err cents

I like how they're offering an amnesty program for people who admit they trade songs...
Delete all your songs and promise never to do it again

That amensity program DOES not offer you future immunity, it simple states, right now , we'll (RIAA) not prosecute you. But since you admitted to theft, you are open to prosecution from the companies the RIAA represent amoung other things. They're currently being sued over it with an 'unfair business practices' claim.

Does anyone know if the RIAA only cares if you share music files they own? Because I like classical music and share a lot of that... and am thinking that they couldnt possibly worry about that.

well, it's classical music.... i don't think there was even such thing as a copyright law when it was created.... unless the person playing the music did, but he didn't creat it... bah! i don't know....
Here's another thing to make note of. The RIAA is running around sueing (can't spell, stupid grammar) everybody in sight. So who is collecting the money? the labels. the sad thing is, if you claim that you do download music, but then you go out to buy the cd, then you are basically paying them to sue you...

I like the thing they are trying to do:
For amnesty from sueing you,if you tell us who you are,you wont be sued...You must promise not to do it anymore....
YA RIGHT!!!!! I dont believe this for a second, its most likely a ploy to find peeps they cant find on thier own!!!!!!! Even if it IS true,it just mentions RIAA NOT SUEING YOU,it doesnt say anything about other companies not doing so.....
I WOULDNT DO THIS.........

Dwnloading music off the internet is never going to end. Napster was taken down, then came other programs like Kazaa. Then came Kazaa Lite and people are going to keep making more and more programs that will allow you to keep downloading files were, for the time being, won't get you into trouble or atleast get cought. Then another way will come out that will beat the others and there will always be a way to download music. The companies can't stop it. Hey, just download movies; not songs. lol

Now here is a good man.
This is no different from robbing a bank, getting away with it, then they track you down. You are caught, you broke the law, deal with the consequences.
But the thing I think should be allowed is a demo of songs. If you like it enough to buy it, then go buy it. Support something you like, don't kill it.
That 12 year old deserved it as much as anyone. I think it would be all the better for them to track down all the little kids who have done it, so maybe they'll learn something in life.
